Summary

Small bowel sarcomas (SBS), often gastrointestinal stromal tumors, are rare, aggressive cancers. Early intra-operative recognition is crucial for appropriate surgical resection and improved patient outcomes.

Background:

  • Small bowel sarcomas (SBS) are rare malignancies, accounting for approximately 10% of small bowel cancers.
  • Often presenting asymptomatically, SBS can manifest as abdominal pain, distention, or weight loss.
  • Currently referred to as gastrointestinal stromal tumors, SBS are mesenchymal neoplasms originating from interstitial cells of Cajal.
