Poststroke depression (PSD) patients exhibit reduced neural complexity compared to non-depressed stroke patients and healthy controls. Lempel-Ziv Complexity (LZC) shows high accuracy in identifying PSD, offering a potential clinical screening tool.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between neural electrical activity complexity and PSD.
  • To assess the diagnostic potential of Lempel-Ziv Complexity (LZC) for PSD.

Main Methods:

  • Resting state electroencephalogram (EEG) data were collected from PSD patients, non-depressed stroke patients (PSND), and healthy controls (CONT).
  • Lempel-Ziv Complexity (LZC) was employed to quantify EEG signal complexity.
  • Statistical analyses, including correlation and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, were performed.

Main Results:

  • PSD patients demonstrated significantly lower neural complexity across all brain regions compared to PSND and CONT groups.
  • LZC achieved over 85% specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy in discriminating PSD.
  • Increased slow-wave rhythms were observed in PSD patients, correlating with neuronal complexity.

Conclusions:

  • Neural complexity, measured by LZC, is reduced in PSD patients.
  • LZC shows promise as a sensitive and stationary indicator for facilitating clinical screening of PSD.
  • LZC may be a valuable tool for identifying abnormal brain activity in PSD.
