Summary

Cowpox is a rare zoonotic disease that can be difficult to diagnose. Prompt recognition of cowpox symptoms is crucial to avoid unnecessary antibiotic or surgical treatments.

Background:

Cowpox is a rare zoonotic disease caused by the cowpox virus, a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus.
Human infections are infrequent, leading to limited clinical experience and diagnostic challenges.
Differential diagnosis for cowpox includes other poxvirus infections, herpesviruses, and bacterial infections.

Observation:

A case of cowpox infection in a 15-year-old girl following a cat scratch is presented.
The clinical presentation and course of the disease are detailed.
The patient's diagnostic journey and treatment are highlighted.

Findings:

Late diagnosis of cowpox can lead to inappropriate medical interventions, such as combined antibiotic therapy or surgery.
