Summary

Extracting P waves from fused electrocardiogram (ECG) signals during atrial premature contractions (APC) is challenging. A new method using maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation effectively cancels T waves, improving P wave extraction for arrhythmia diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Cardiology
  • Signal Processing

Background:

  • P wave and T wave fusion in electrocardiogram (ECG) signals during atrial premature contractions (APC) complicates analysis.
  • Accurate P wave extraction is crucial for diagnosing supra-ventricular arrhythmias and measuring P wave parameters.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a novel T wave cancellation method for P wave extraction from fused ECG signals.
  • To improve the accuracy of P wave extraction in the presence of APC.

Main Methods:

  • A maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation-based T wave cancellation technique is introduced.
  • Simultaneous estimation of T wave and its peak timing point for accurate subtraction.
  • The T wave peak timing point serves as an alignment reference for subtraction.

Main Results:

  • The proposed MAP estimation method outperforms traditional T wave cancellation in simulation (lower normalized mean square error, higher cross-correlation index).
  • Extracted P waves from real ECGs with APC show greater morphological similarity to non-overlapping P waves compared to the traditional method.

Conclusions:

  • The novel MAP estimation-based T wave cancellation method effectively extracts P waves from fused ECG signals during APC.
  • This technique offers improved accuracy and morphological fidelity for P wave analysis in clinical settings.
