Abstract:
We attempted to validate a previously derived clinical prediction rule for candidemia in the pediatric intensive care unit. This multicenter case control study did not identify significant association of candidemia with most of the previously identified predictors. Additional study in larger cohorts with other predictor variables is needed.
Insights
This study validated a clinical prediction rule for candidemia in pediatric intensive care units. Most previously identified predictors were not significantly associated with candidemia, indicating a need for further research.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine
- Infectious Diseases
- Clinical Epidemiology
Background:
- Candidemia is a serious bloodstream infection in critically ill children.
- A clinical prediction rule was previously developed to identify children at risk for candidemia.
Purpose of the Study:
- To validate a previously derived clinical prediction rule for candidemia in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).
Main Methods:
- A multicenter case-control study was conducted.
- The study assessed the association between previously identified predictors and candidemia in PICU patients.
Main Results:
- Most previously identified predictors showed no significant association with candidemia in this cohort.
- The existing clinical prediction rule requires further validation.
Conclusions:
- The previously derived clinical prediction rule for candidemia in PICU patients could not be validated in this multicenter study.
- Further research with larger cohorts and additional predictor variables is necessary to improve candidemia risk prediction in critically ill children.
