Background:

  • Emergency contraception (EC) users represent a population at risk for sexually transmissible infections (STIs).
  • Traditional STI screening venues may not be fully accessible or acceptable to all individuals seeking EC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and acceptability of pharmacy-based and home-based STI screening.
  • To evaluate these alternate testing venues among users of emergency contraception (EC).

Main Methods:

  • Two-phase study (February 2011-July 2012) involving EC users.
  • Phase I: Vouchers for free STI testing at onsite clinics offered to EC purchasers in pharmacies.
  • Phase II: Online ordering of free home-based STI test kits promoted via targeted social media advertising.

Main Results:

  • Phase I had low enrollment (38 participants); none tested positive for STIs.
  • Phase II showed higher engagement with >45,000 click-throughs, 382 survey completions, and 290 kit requests (28% returned); six participants tested positive.
  • Challenges included recruitment, pharmacy staff engagement, discreet advertising, and costs.

Conclusions:

  • Pharmacy and home-based STI screening has low uptake but is feasible and acceptable among EC users, particularly younger women.
  • Collaboration with and training of pharmacy and medical staff are crucial for successful implementation.
  • Further research is needed to optimize non-traditional screening strategies to improve uptake and case detection.
