Exercise Stress Test01:26

Exercise Stress Test

1.9K
Introduction
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Obese children in weight management programs show low peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak). This study presents a protocol to assess exercise capacity in these young patients.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Endocrinology
  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing
  • Obesity Medicine

Background:

  • Pediatric obesity is a growing public health concern.
  • Assessing functional capacity is crucial for managing obese youth.
  • Peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) is a key indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a protocol for testing the functional capacity of obese pediatric patients.
  • To report the peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) in patients at a pediatric weight management center.

Main Methods:

  • A multistage exercise test on a treadmill was performed by 111 obese pediatric patients (mean age 12.5 years).
  • Peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) was measured and expressed in absolute terms, relative to total body mass, and relative to fat-free mass.
  • Valid VO2peak data were obtained from 90 patients (81%).

Main Results:

  • The mean BMI z-score was 2.4 and mean body fat was 36.5%.
  • While absolute VO2peak differed between sexes, relative VO2peak values were similar.
  • The mean VO2peak was 25.7 mL·kg(-1)·min(-1), with a range of 13.5-36.7 mL·kg(-1)·min(-1).

Conclusions:

  • Obese youth in a stage 3 pediatric weight management center demonstrated low VO2peak.
  • The described protocol can serve as a model for assessing exercise responses in obese pediatric populations.
