    • To compare high and low SE students to determine factors associated with low SE.

    • Utilized data from an anonymous annual survey of veterinary students at Michigan State University (2006-2012).
    • Compared high and low SE students using a contrasting groups design and logistic regression.
    • Analyzed student-reported knowledge, skill development, learning environment, stress, SE, academic performance, and demographics.

    • The proportion of low SE students was highest during the second year of the program.
    • Perceived stress was significantly associated with low SE.

    • Further research is warranted to understand student academic trajectories and their impact on success.
    • Interventions focusing on stress reduction and fostering a supportive environment may improve veterinary student SE.
