Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the connection between pregnancy and thyroid autoimmunity in Nigerian women.
  • To assess the prevalence of thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-Ab) in pregnant versus non-pregnant women.

Main Methods:

  • An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in South Western Nigeria.
  • Serum TPO-Ab levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunoassays in 108 pregnant and 52 non-pregnant women.
  • Statistical analyses included Spearman correlation, ANOVA, and Chi-square tests.

Main Results:

  • Pregnant women exhibited significantly higher mean TPO-Ab levels (11.58 IU/ml) compared to non-pregnant controls (7.23 IU/ml).
  • 25% of pregnant women had elevated TPO-Ab, versus approximately 2% in the control group (P < 0.001).
  • The prevalence of elevated TPO-Ab decreased with advancing gestational age: 33.3% (first trimester), 25.6% (second trimester), and 15.2% (third trimester).

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid autoimmunity, identified by TPO-Ab, is common among pregnant Nigerian women.
  • The frequency of thyroid autoimmunity appears to diminish as pregnancy advances.
  • This highlights the importance of monitoring thyroid function in pregnant populations.
