Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development01:19

Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development

1.4K
Kohlberg's theory of moral development uses the Heinz dilemma — a thought experiment in which a man, Heinz, must decide whether to steal an unaffordable drug to save his dying wife — to illustrate the evolution of moral reasoning. This framework, divided into three levels with two stages, highlights how individuals' understanding of right and wrong becomes increasingly complex.
Pre-Conventional Level
At the pre-conventional level, morality is primarily driven by personal...

Lazarus's Cognitive Appraisal Theory

2.7K
Cognitive psychologist Richard Lazarus proposed the cognitive-mediational theory of emotions, which emphasizes how individuals' assessments of stressors significantly affect their experience of stress. According to Lazarus, the stress response is determined by a two-step appraisal process: primary appraisal and secondary appraisal. These cognitive appraisals help individuals evaluate the potential impact of a stressor and determine the adequacy of their coping resources.
Primary Appraisal:...

Social Foundations of Self II: The Generalized Other

377
According to George Herbert Mead, as children progress beyond the game stage, they develop a more comprehensive understanding of societal rules and norms. This cognitive and social development enables them to internalize the expectations of the broader community, refining their ability to regulate behavior.Consistent participation in organized activities is crucial in helping children recognize that their actions are not isolated but contribute to a more significant, interconnected group...

Language and Cognition

974
Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic

7.9K
In order to make good decisions, we use our knowledge and our reasoning. Often, this knowledge and reasoning is sound and solid. However, sometimes, we are swayed by biases or by others manipulating a situation. For example, let’s say you and three friends wanted to rent a house and had a combined target budget of $1,600. The realtor shows you only very run-down houses for $1,600 and then shows you a very nice house for $2,000. Might you ask each person to pay more in rent to get the...

Language Development01:22

Language Development

1.1K
Children master language quickly and with relative ease, supported by both biological predisposition and reinforcement. B. F. Skinner (1957) proposed that language is learned through reinforcement, while Noam Chomsky (1965) argued that language acquisition mechanisms are biologically determined.
The critical period for language acquisition suggests that the ability to acquire language is at its peak early in life. As people age, this proficiency decreases. Language development begins very...

Area of Science:

  • Psycholinguistics
  • Neuroscience
  • Second Language Acquisition

Background:

  • Understanding how personal values influence real-time language processing is crucial.
  • Previous research has not fully clarified the online integration of valuation in second language (L2) comprehension.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if valuation is incrementally integrated during L2 sentence interpretation.
  • To examine the neural correlates of value-based processing in L2 speakers using event-related potentials (ERPs).

Main Methods:

  • An event-related potential (ERP) experiment was conducted with native Spanish speakers and French-Spanish L2 speakers.
  • Participants read sentences containing value-consistent and value-inconsistent statements and indicated agreement.
  • Brain activity was recorded during sentence reading.

Main Results:

  • Behaviorally, both groups showed identical valuation patterns.
  • Native speakers exhibited both semantic (N400) and affect-related (LPP) ERP responses to value-inconsistent statements.
  • L2 speakers showed only an affect-related (LPP) response, without the semantic N400, to value-inconsistent statements.

Conclusions:

  • Valuation is integrated online during L2 sentence comprehension, indicated by the LPP.
  • This online valuation processing in L2 speakers does not appear to interfere with semantic interpretation, evidenced by the absence of the N400 effect.
  • Findings suggest distinct neural pathways for value integration in L2 processing compared to native speakers.
