Summary

Giant benign prostatic hyperplasia, a rare prostate condition, was successfully treated. A 708g prostatic mass was surgically removed from a patient presenting with acute urinary retention.

The impact of minimally invasive surgical therapy for Benign prostatic hyperplasia on sexual function: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background:

  • Giant benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an exceptionally rare prostate gland pathology.
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia can cause significant lower urinary tract symptoms.

Observation:

  • A 65-year-old male presented with acute urinary retention due to a large left prostatic mass.
  • Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed the bulky mass.
  • Preoperative prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels were elevated at 44 ng/mL, with biopsies negative for malignancy.

Findings:

  • Open radical retropubic prostatectomy was successfully performed.
  • The resected prostatic mass measured 13.5 cm x 11.5 cm x 5.2 cm, weighing 708g.
  • Postoperative pathology confirmed the absence of malignancy.
