Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the correlation between normal thyroid ultrasonography (US) findings and thyroid function tests.
  • To determine if US can predict normal thyroid function.

Main Methods:

  • 681 individuals were categorized into normal (group 1) and hypoechoic (group 2) US groups.
  • Individuals with nodular thyroid lesions were excluded.
  • Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free T4 (fT4), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), anti-thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb), and TSH receptor antibody (TRAb) were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • In the normal US group (group 1), 86.1% had normal TSH, 93.7% had normal thyroid antibodies, and 77.6% had all normal thyroid tests.
  • Only 6.9% of individuals in the hypoechoic group (group 2) exhibited normal thyroid tests (P<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid ultrasonography (US) demonstrates a significant correlation with normal thyroid function tests.
  • US is a valuable imaging modality for predicting normal thyroid function.
