Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and characteristics of elder abuse in Eastern Bolivia.
  • To identify the types of abuse and perpetrators within families and communities.

  • A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 210 adults aged 60 and above.
  • Data were collected using the Elder Abuse Suspicion Index (EASI) and Yaffe's Evaluation Form of Social Work.

  • A significant prevalence of elder abuse was identified at 39%.
  • Psychological abuse (32.4%) and neglect (21.9%) were the most frequent forms of abuse.
  • Adult children were identified as perpetrators in 66.7% of cases; dysfunctional families showed higher abuse rates.

  • Elder abuse is a prevalent issue in Eastern Bolivia, comparable to rates in other developing and European countries.
  • The findings highlight the need for public health interventions and support systems for vulnerable older adults.
  • Interventions should consider the role of family dynamics and the specific vulnerabilities of older women.
