Background:

Parental alexithymia, characterized by difficulty identifying and expressing emotions, has been under-researched in relation to parenting.
Understanding this link is crucial for developing targeted interventions for families.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the associations between parental alexithymia and parenting styles (authoritarian, authoritative, permissive).
To investigate the relationship between parental alexithymia and psychological control domains (dependency, achievement).

Main Methods:

A sample of 946 parents (mothers and fathers) of adolescents aged 11-18 completed self-report measures.
Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to assess predictive relationships.

Main Results:

Parental alexithymia positively predicted authoritative and permissive parenting styles.
Parental alexithymia negatively predicted authoritarian parenting.
Alexithymia positively predicted both dependency-oriented and achievement-oriented psychological control.

Conclusions:

Parental alexithymia is associated with specific parenting styles and psychological control strategies.
Findings highlight the importance of emotional processing in parenting dynamics and child development.
