Orthopedic surgeons graduate with insufficient business and practice management knowledge. This functional knowledge deficiency (FKD) impacts their ability to effectively manage medical practices.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the business and practice management knowledge of orthopedic residents at graduation.
  • To evaluate the essential business knowledge needed by practicing orthopedic surgeons.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to orthopedic residency graduates to assess their understanding and the importance of 9 business/management skills.
  • Functional Knowledge Deficiency (FKD) was calculated as the difference between perceived importance and graduation knowledge.
  • Data were analyzed based on practice type (physician-managed vs. non-physician-managed) and employment setting (hospital, academic, private).
