Tissue oxygen index (TOI) oscillates during exercise recovery, potentially linked to adenosine triphosphate feedback. Blood pH did not significantly affect the oscillation frequency in this study.
Area of Science:
- Physiology
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Exercise recovery involves complex physiological feedback mechanisms.
- Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) allows non-invasive monitoring of tissue oxygenation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate oscillations in tissue oxygen index (TOI) during post-exercise recovery.
- To determine the influence of blood pH on the frequency of TOI oscillations.
Main Methods:
- Participants underwent three exercise protocols of varying intensity and duration.
- Tissue oxygen index (TOI) was measured using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).
- Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis was used to determine the power spectra density (PSD) and dominant frequencies (Fmax).
Main Results:
- A significant difference in the frequency of maximal power spectra density (Fmax) was observed between 12-minute and 30-second high-intensity exercise recovery.
- No significant difference in Fmax was found between 30% and 70% peak oxygen uptake (V(.)o(2)peak) exercise recovery, despite differing blood pH and lactate levels.
- Oscillations in TOI were confirmed during recovery from all tested exercise conditions.
Conclusions:
- Exercise recovery exhibits oscillations in tissue oxygen index (TOI).
- The study did not conclusively demonstrate an effect of blood pH on the frequency of these TOI oscillations.

Correlation between ECG and Cardiac Cycle
A cardiac action potential originates in the SA node and spreads throughout the atria and the AV node in approximately 0.03 seconds. This results in the P wave in an ECG and triggers atrial contraction. The action potential is then briefly slowed at the AV node, allowing the atria to contract and fill the ventricles with blood before...
