The muscles surrounding the shoulder girdle, including the clavicle and scapula, primarily stabilize the scapula. This stable base allows other muscles to move the humerus effectively. Scapular movements often mirror those of the humerus and extend its range of motion. For instance, raising the arm above the head would not be feasible without simultaneous upward rotation of the scapula.

Summary

The Latarjet procedure may cause scapular dyskinesis in some patients, potentially impacting shoulder function. The iliac crest bone graft transfer (ICBGT) showed no such effects in this study.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate scapular position and motion after Latarjet and modified iliac crest bone graft transfer (ICBGT) procedures.
  • To compare the incidence of scapular dyskinesis between the two surgical techniques.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 46 patients with recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation.
  • 23 patients underwent Latarjet, 23 underwent ICBGT.
  • Scapulothoracic position assessed using the dyskinesis method at a mean 20-month follow-up.

Main Results:

  • High intraobserver and interobserver reliability for dyskinesis assessment.
  • Scapular dyskinesis observed in 5/20 Latarjet patients vs. 0/20 ICBGT patients (P = .047).
