Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between comorbid systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and hyperthyroidism.
  • To determine the prevalence of hyperthyroidism in patients diagnosed with SLE.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted using data from Clalit Health Services, Israel's largest health maintenance organization.
  • 5018 patients with SLE were compared to 25,090 age- and sex-matched controls for hyperthyroidism prevalence.
  • Statistical analyses included Chi-square and t-tests for univariate analysis and logistic regression for multivariate analysis.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of hyperthyroidism was significantly higher in SLE patients (2.59%) compared to controls (0.91%), with p < 0.001.
  • Multivariate analysis revealed a significant association between SLE and hyperthyroidism, with an odds ratio of 2.52 (95% CI: 2.028-3.137).

Conclusions:

  • Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) exhibit a greater prevalence of hyperthyroidism.
  • Healthcare providers managing SLE patients should consider the increased risk of hyperthyroidism and monitor for this thyroid dysfunction.
