Summary

Metachronous multiple primary malignancies (MPM) involving lung cancer have better overall survival than synchronous MPM. Colorectal, esophageal, and thyroid cancers frequently accompany lung cancer in MPM patients.

Background:

  • The incidence of multiple primary malignancies (MPM) is increasing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the clinical characteristics of MPM patients with lung cancer.
  • To determine the prognosis of MPM patients involving lung cancer.
  • To identify common accompanying malignancies in lung cancer MPM.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 5405 lung cancer cases.
  • Inclusion of 185 patients diagnosed with MPM involving lung cancer (2005-2013).
  • Exclusion of patients with three malignancies for focused analysis on two.

Main Results:

  • Colorectal (25/175), esophageal (17/175), and thyroid (13/175) cancers were most frequent.
  • Metachronous MPM (111/175) showed significantly better overall survival (OS) than synchronous MPM (64/175).
  • Time of occurrence and cancer stage were independent prognostic factors for OS.

Conclusions:

  • Colorectal, esophageal, and thyroid cancers frequently accompany lung cancer in MPM.
  • Metachronous MPM patients demonstrate superior OS compared to synchronous MPM patients.
  • Time of occurrence and stage are critical for predicting outcomes in lung cancer MPM.
