Myelomonocytic leukaemia with a preleukaemic syndrome and Ph1 chromosome in monozygotic twins
Archives of Disease in Childhood
|January 1, 1977
Abstract:
A case of monozygotic twins with a preleukaemic phase of 3 1/2 years is reported. The final haematological picture was that of myelomonocytic leukaemia. The karyotype investigated in one twin during the final period of the disease showed a Ph1 chromosome.
Insights
This study reports on monozygotic twins who experienced a preleukaemic phase for 3.5 years before developing myelomonocytic leukaemia. One twin showed a Philadelphia chromosome (Ph1) during the advanced stages of the disease.
Area of Science:
- Hematology
- Oncology
- Genetics
Background:
- Myelomonocytic leukaemia is a serious hematologic malignancy.
- Monozygotic twins present a unique opportunity to study genetic and environmental factors in disease development.
- A preleukaemic phase can precede overt leukaemia, making early detection challenging.
