    Summary

    This study investigated if allergies cause fibrositis in 20 patients. Results showed traditional allergic reactions are unlikely to be the cause of fibrositis, as key allergy indicators were normal.

    Background:

    • Fibrositis is a condition characterized by pain and tenderness in muscles and connective tissues.
    • The potential role of allergic processes in fibrositis has been hypothesized but not extensively studied.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the association between active allergic processes and fibrositis in patients without other underlying diseases.
    • To determine if type I hypersensitivity reactions contribute to the pathogenesis of fibrositis.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty patients diagnosed with active fibrositis and normal electromyographic findings were recruited.
    • Patient histories for atopy and family history of allergic diathesis were collected.
    • Serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels and peripheral eosinophil counts were measured for all participants.

    Main Results:

    • A history of atopy was reported in less than 50% of patients.
    • A family history of allergic diathesis was present in over 50% of families.
    • All patients exhibited normal serum IgE levels and eosinophil counts.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings suggest that traditional allergic mechanisms, specifically type I hypersensitivity, are unlikely to be the primary mediators of fibrositis.
    • Further research may be needed to explore other potential etiologies of fibrositis.
