    Summary

    Parasitic infections, particularly Hymenolepis nana, are common in children with Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis. Male children aged 6-8 years and those from rural areas showed higher infection rates.

    Background:

    • Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis is an ocular inflammatory condition.
    • Parasitic infections are a potential contributing factor in pediatric eye diseases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of parasitic infections in children with Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis.
    • To determine the relationship between parasitic infections and Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis in a pediatric population.

    Main Methods:

    • Microscopic examination of stool samples from 50 children diagnosed with Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis.
    • Data collection on patient demographics including age, sex, and geographic location (rural/urban).

    Main Results:

    • A 24% prevalence of Hymenolepis nana infection was detected.
    • Other detected parasites included E. hyistolytica (2%), Enterobius vermicularis (2%), Giardia lamblia (2%), and Tenia spp. (2%).
    • Male gender and age range of 6-8 years were associated with higher infection rates; rural children were more affected than urban children.

    Conclusions:

    • Parasitic infections, especially Hymenolepis nana, are significantly prevalent in children suffering from Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis.
    • Early diagnosis and treatment of parasitic infections may be crucial for managing Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis in children.
