Blood Studies for Cardiovascular System III: Serum Lipid Profile

827
Understanding serum lipids is crucial for maintaining cardiovascular health and preventing heart disease and stroke.
Serum lipids are fats and fatty substances in the blood and are crucial for various bodily functions, including energy storage, cellular structure, and hormone production. Serum lipids consist of cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids.
Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like substance found in all body cells. It is crucial for producing hormones, vitamin D, and substances that aid...

Acute Coronary Syndrome III: Diagnostic Studies

440
Diagnosing acute coronary syndrome or ACS begins with a thorough patient history. Notable symptoms include central, crushing chest pain radiating to the left arm, neck, jaw, or back, along with shortness of breath, sweating (diaphoresis), nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and palpitations. It is crucial to note any history of cardiac illnesses and assess risk factors, including age, gender, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and a sedentary lifestyle.During physical examination, vital...

Summary

Low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is a significant risk factor for stroke. This study found higher HDL cholesterol in stroke patients, particularly women, indicating potential gender-specific lipid abnormalities.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Clinical Lipidology

Background:

  • Stroke risk has declined, possibly due to better hypertension control.
  • Lipid profiles, including low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, are implicated in cerebrovascular diseases.
  • Understanding lipid abnormalities in stroke patients is crucial for risk stratification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate serum lipid profiles in ischemic stroke patients and age-matched controls.
  • To investigate potential differences in cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL, and apoproteins between groups.
  • To identify gender-specific lipid patterns in stroke patients.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective evaluation of 59 ischemic stroke patients (non-cardioembolic) and 60 age-matched controls.
  • Measurement of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol, apoprotein A, and apoprotein B.
  • Blood samples collected at least 8 weeks post-stroke or transient ischemic attack.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, or apoproteins between stroke patients and controls.
  • Significantly higher HDL cholesterol levels were observed in stroke patients compared to controls.
  • Female stroke patients exhibited significantly higher total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B compared to male stroke patients.

Conclusions:

  • Low HDL cholesterol is confirmed as a potential risk factor for stroke.
  • Lipid abnormalities, particularly in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B, appear more pronounced in female stroke patients.
  • Findings suggest gender-specific considerations for lipid management in stroke prevention.
