Abstract:
Studies addressing the issue of media reporting of suicide and subsequent suicide are reviewed. The majority demonstrate a statistically significant association between the amount of such reporting and ensuing increases in suicide. Restraint is clearly indicated. The media could assist by publicising alternative coping mechanisms, rather than "normalizing" suicidal behaviour by reporting it.
