Sleep is an essential physiological process vital to maintaining overall well-being. The reticular activating system (RAS), a network of neurons in the brainstem, regulates wakefulness and sleep. Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate nighttime information processing in good sleepers (GS) and insomnia sufferers (INS).
  • To examine the association between information processing and concurrent sleep quality in both groups.

Main Methods:

  • Participants: 39 GS and 29 INS underwent 4 nights of polysomnography (PSG).
  • Procedure: Event-related potentials (ERPs) (N1, P2, N350) were recorded during NREM sleep on the 4th night using an oddball paradigm.
  • Analysis: ERP amplitudes were analyzed in relation to sleep stages, diagnosis, and subjective/objective sleep quality.

Main Results:

  • INS showed a larger N350 amplitude during SWS compared to GS.
  • GS exhibited a larger N350 amplitude during stage 2 sleep.
  • Better objective sleep quality correlated with smaller N350 amplitude; better subjective sleep quality correlated with smaller P2 and N350 amplitudes, irrespective of diagnosis.
  • INS demonstrated altered N350 amplitudes regardless of sleep quality.

Conclusions:

  • Nighttime information processing is associated with both subjective and objective sleep quality in GS and INS.
  • Insomnia sufferers display distinct alterations in sleep-related information processing, especially concerning inhibition, independent of their sleep quality.
