[Ear diseases--potentials and limitations of radiology]
1Radiologische Klinik, Universität Bonn.
Abstract:
The possibilities and limitations of conventional plain x-ray films, angiography, pluridirectional tomography, high-resolving CT (HR-CT) and magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) are described in general and then demonstrated in greater detail on the basis of characteristic findings in otological diseases. HR-CT is definitely superior to pluridirectional tomography within the general framework of diagnostic technique that goes beyond the initial findings. MRT is of only limited diagnostic value despite highest contrast resolution because it cannot differentiate between air and bones; however, in respect of some specific problems it is superior to HR-CT. The article concludes with suggestions regarding the selection and indication of refined diagnostic radiology in diseases of the ear.
