Grade Inflation in Nursing Education: Proposed Solutions for an Ongoing Problem

The purpose of assigning grades at the conclusion of a course is to convey the level of achievement of learners. However, with the presence of grade inflation in nursing education, it poses a great threat to the evaluation process.

The purpose of this article is to highlight the factors that influence grade inflation and to explore possible solutions to minimize the incidence of grade inflation in nursing education.

A review of the literature revealed that a variety of factors influenced grade inflation and educators were indeed lenient with their grading practices, which hence attenuates the purpose of grading and evaluation.

While it may be an arduous task for nursing faculty to evaluate nursing students, nursing faculty have the obligation to preserve academic integrity and must devise appropriate solutions to address the incidence of grade inflation in nursing education.
