Cognitive Therapy01:25

Cognitive Therapy

1.4K
Cognitive therapy, pioneered by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, is a structured approach to addressing psychological distress by focusing on the influence of thoughts on emotions and behaviors. All cognitive therapies involve the basic assumption that human beings have control over their feelings, and that how individuals feel about something depends on how they think about it. Unlike psychoanalytic methods that delve into unconscious processes or humanistic approaches emphasizing...

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

652
Cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) are grounded in the belief that our thoughts profoundly influence our emotions and actions. Advocates of CBT emphasize three core assumptions: first, that cognitions are identifiable and measurable; second, that they are central to psychological functioning; and third, that irrational or maladaptive beliefs can be replaced with rational and adaptive ones. This transformative approach to therapy has paved the way for specific models such as Albert...

Modeling in Therapy

700
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders01:24

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

920
Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...

Cognitive Development During Adolescence01:18

Cognitive Development During Adolescence

867
During adolescence, individuals experience significant cognitive development that enhances their understanding of others' emotions and thoughts, known as cognitive empathy. This period is marked by an increased ability to adapt to others' perspectives and a more nuanced understanding of others' mental states, a skill that is foundational for social problem-solving and conflict avoidance. The development of cognitive empathy relies heavily on the theory of mind — the...

Beck's Cognitive Therapy01:25

Beck's Cognitive Therapy

542
Cognitive therapy is a psychological approach designed to address distortions in thinking, which can lead to negative emotions and unrealistic beliefs. These cognitive distortions often influence how individuals interpret and respond to situations, exacerbating emotional distress. Below are some prevalent cognitive distortions, their characteristics, and examples of how they manifest in thought processes.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Information Technology

Background:

  • Mobile technology and internet use are increasing for healthcare access.
  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is effective for adolescent depression and suitable for technological enhancement.
  • A technology-enhanced CBT intervention was developed for adolescent depression, including online therapist training, in-session tablet use, and text messaging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a technology-enhanced CBT intervention for adolescent depression.
  • To assess the impact of online training on therapist knowledge of CBT.
  • To measure user satisfaction with technology-based tools and therapeutic alliance.

Main Methods:

  • Eighteen clinicians randomized patients to CBT or treatment as usual (TAU) for 12 weeks.
  • CBT clinicians used an online tutorial, iPads for patient education, and text messaging for reminders and self-monitoring.
  • Outcome measures included knowledge tests, user satisfaction (SUS), depression symptoms (QIDS-A), and therapeutic alliance (TASA).

Main Results:

  • Online CBT tutorial significantly increased therapist knowledge.
  • High user satisfaction reported for iPad tools and text messaging; 95% of teens found text message review helpful.
  • Therapeutic alliance ratings were higher in the CBT arm; depression reduction was significant in both groups, with greater improvement in the CBT arm.
  • Effect sizes ranged from small to large across outcome measures.

Conclusions:

  • The technology-enhanced CBT intervention is feasible for treating adolescent depression.
  • This approach may help address the shortage of therapists trained in evidence-based treatments.
  • The findings support the integration of technology into CBT for adolescent mental health care.
