Summary

Staphylococcus aureus strains found on rabbit meat are diverse, belonging to various clonal lineages common in humans and animals. Most isolates carried toxin genes, but none showed resistance to common antibiotics like methicillin or vancomycin.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from rabbit carcasses.
  • To investigate the genetic diversity, toxin gene profiles, and antibiotic resistance of these strains.

Main Methods:

  • Spa typing and DNA microarray analysis were performed on 137 S. aureus isolates from rabbit carcasses.
  • Detection of enterotoxin genes and antibiotic resistance genes was conducted.

Main Results:

  • Isolates belonged to multiple clonal complexes (CCs) and 13 spa types, including two novel types (t4770, t8456) specific to rabbits.
  • Enterotoxin genes (sea, sed, sej, ser) and the egc operon (SEG/SEI/SElM/SElN/SElO/SElU) were prevalent.
  • No resistance genes for methicillin, vancomycin, or aminoglycosides were found, but penicillin resistance (blaZ/I/R) was common.

Conclusions:

  • Rabbit meat harbors a heterogeneous population of S. aureus with diverse toxin profiles.
  • These strains share clonal lineages with those found in humans and other animals.
  • The findings highlight the importance of monitoring S. aureus in rabbit meat production for food safety.
