Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a rare parasitic infection. This case study highlights successful laparoscopic removal of a giant splenic hydatid cyst, demonstrating a safe and effective treatment option.

  • * Cystic echinococcosis (CE), a zoonotic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus, typically affects the liver and lungs.
  • * Primary splenic involvement in abdominal CE is rare, occurring in less than 2% of cases.

Observation:

  • * A 75-year-old Peruvian woman presented with a primary giant splenic hydatid cyst.
  • * The cyst measured 15 cm in diameter without daughter vesicles or involvement of other abdominal organs.

Findings:

  • * Laparoscopic removal of the giant splenic hydatid cyst was performed without complications.
  • * Perioperative prophylactic albendazole chemotherapy was administered.
  • * The patient remained asymptomatic at 3-month follow-up with no recurrence observed on CT scan.
