    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Education
    • Surgical Training
    • Cognitive Psychology

    Background:

    • High anxiety in veterinary students during live surgeries can impair procedural recall.
    • Multimodal teaching enhances learning, but student preferences for recall methods are undocumented.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate veterinary students' preferred methods for recalling surgical procedures.
    • To understand how students translate theoretical knowledge into practical surgical skills.

    Main Methods:

    • Semi-structured interviews with 26 randomly selected veterinary students.
    • Analysis of recall strategies used after multimodal surgical preparation.

    Main Results:

    • 58% of students used visual, dynamic recollection, primarily by mentally replaying instructional videos.
    • 15% used a 'mental recipe' approach, and 12% visualized their own notes.

    Conclusions:

    • Visual, dynamic recollection is the most common method among Danish veterinary students.
    • Instructional videos are a crucial component of multimodal surgical preparation.
    • Supporting traditional methods with high-quality videos is important for surgical education.
