The innovation of touch-tone telephony revolutionized the telecommunications industry by replacing the traditional rotary dial with a dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signaling system. This system uses a matrix-style keypad with buttons arranged in four rows and three columns, creating 12 distinct signals each assigned to a pair of frequencies. Each button press results in a simultaneous generation of two sinusoidal tones – one from a low-frequency group (697 to 941 Hz) and one from a...

    Area of Science:

    • Wireless Communication
    • Acoustic Engineering
    • Signal Processing

    Background:

    • Radio frequency (RF) and infrared (IR) are established wireless technologies.
    • Ultrasonic communication offers a potential alternative in specific scenarios.
    • Developing robust airborne ultrasonic data transmission is crucial for expanding wireless options.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To design and implement a multichannel airborne ultrasonic data communication system.
    • To evaluate the performance of ON-OFF Keying (OOK) and Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation schemes.
    • To analyze the system's data transfer rate, bit error rate (BER), and range capabilities.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized commercially available capacitive ultrasonic transducers.
    • Implemented six channels operating between 50-110 kHz with 12 kHz spacing.
    • Employed OOK and BPSK modulation for simultaneous multi-packet transmission.
    • Developed a predictive model for ultrasonic signal propagation.
    • Investigated system performance under varying distances and transducer misalignments.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved data transfer rates up to 60 kb/s.
    • Demonstrated error-free decoding up to 5 m using multichannel OOK.
    • Established a range-dependent scheme: 5-channel OOK (63 kb/s) within 2 m, 6-channel OOK (60 kb/s) between 2-5 m.
    • Extended error-free transmission up to 10 m using 3-channel BPSK (30 kb/s) beyond 5 m.
    • Confirmed error-free transmission with transducer misalignment up to 7% lateral displacement and 7° oblique angles, with BPSK showing higher robustness.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed multichannel ultrasonic system is effective for wireless data communication.
    • Ultrasonic communication provides a viable alternative to RF and IR, especially in indoor environments.
    • The system's performance is adaptable to different ranges and conditions through modulation and channel selection, with BPSK offering superior resilience to misalignment.
