Area of Science:

  • Addiction Medicine
  • Chronic Disease Management
  • Healthcare Policy

Background:

  • Recent research classifies substance use disorders as chronic illnesses.
  • The Affordable Care Act facilitates integrating addiction treatment into mainstream healthcare.
  • The Chronic Care Model (CCM) offers a proactive, team-oriented approach to managing chronic conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically examine the applicability of the CCM to substance use disorder treatment.
  • To compare the CCM's potential in substance use disorder treatment with its established use in type 2 diabetes management.

Main Methods:

  • Comparative analysis of the Chronic Care Model (CCM) in type 2 diabetes and substance use disorder treatment.
  • Systematic examination of CCM components for suitability in addiction care.

Main Results:

  • Most proactive, team-oriented clinical management practices from diabetes care are applicable to substance use disorders.
  • Primary care teams can implement these adapted CCM practices.
  • Potential benefits in addiction treatment are comparable to those seen in diabetes management.

Conclusions:

  • The Chronic Care Model (CCM) is a viable framework for improving substance use disorder treatment.
  • Implementing CCM principles can enhance the quality of care for individuals with substance use disorders.
  • Addressing substance abuse through CCM can positively impact the management of other co-occurring illnesses.
