In pre-eclampsia (PE), serum ceruloplasmin and uric acid levels are elevated and serve as effective biomarkers for oxidative stress. These markers show higher diagnostic accuracy than antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px).
Area of Science:
- Biochemistry
- Obstetrics
- Pathophysiology
Background:
- Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a serious pregnancy complication associated with increased oxidative stress.
- Antioxidants play a crucial role in mitigating oxidative damage during pregnancy.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the diagnostic value of ceruloplasmin and other antioxidants (superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), uric acid) in pre-eclampsia.
- To evaluate oxidative stress levels in pre-eclampsia patients compared to normal pregnancies.
Main Methods:
- A prospective study involving 32 pre-eclampsia patients and 60 healthy pregnant women.
- Measurement of serum ceruloplasmin, uric acid, SOD, and GSH-Px levels.
Main Results:
- Serum levels of ceruloplasmin, uric acid, and SOD were significantly higher in the pre-eclampsia group.
- Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels did not show a significant difference.
- Ceruloplasmin and uric acid demonstrated superior diagnostic accuracy for oxidative stress in pre-eclampsia compared to SOD and GSH-Px.
Conclusions:
- Serum ceruloplasmin, particularly in conjunction with uric acid, shows significant potential as a biomarker for oxidative stress in pre-eclampsia.
- These markers offer valuable diagnostic insights into the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia.

Peroxisomes lack the genetic machinery required to code for their own proteins. Hence, most peroxisomal membrane, lumenal and transmembrane proteins are synthesized in the cytoplasm or ER and transported to the peroxisome...
