Blood Studies for Cardiovascular System III: Serum Lipid Profile

812
Understanding serum lipids is crucial for maintaining cardiovascular health and preventing heart disease and stroke.
Serum lipids are fats and fatty substances in the blood and are crucial for various bodily functions, including energy storage, cellular structure, and hormone production. Serum lipids consist of cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids.
Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like substance found in all body cells. It is crucial for producing hormones, vitamin D, and substances that aid...

Cholesterol: Significance and Regulation

1.9K
Although not a source of energy, cholesterol plays a significant role as a foundational structure for bile salts, steroid hormones, and vitamin D, as well as being a crucial component of plasma membranes. Approximately 15% of blood cholesterol is derived from our diet, with the remainder synthesized from acetyl CoA by the liver and intestines. Cholesterol is eliminated from the body through its conversion into bile salts, which are eventually discarded in the feces.
Considering cholesterol and...

Summary

Serum chemerin levels are elevated in lipodystrophy (LD) and linked to metabolic complications. Metreleptin treatment did not alter circulating chemerin in LD patients, suggesting chemerin may originate from adipose tissue.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Metabolic Diseases
  • Adipokine Research

Background:

  • Lipodystrophy (LD) involves adipose tissue loss and metabolic dysfunction.
  • Adipokines like chemerin play roles in insulin resistance and inflammation.
  • Chemerin's role in LD has not been previously investigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine serum chemerin levels in lipodystrophy patients.
  • To assess chemerin mRNA expression in insulin-sensitive tissues of LD mice.
  • To evaluate the impact of metreleptin treatment on circulating chemerin in LD patients.

Main Methods:

  • Serum chemerin and metabolic parameters measured in 37 LD patients and 37 controls.
  • Chemerin mRNA expression analyzed in adipose tissues of LD and control mice.
  • Circulating chemerin levels monitored in 10 LD patients over one year during metreleptin treatment.

Main Results:

  • Serum chemerin levels were significantly higher in LD patients compared to controls.
  • Circulating chemerin positively correlated with HbA1c and CRP levels.
  • Chemerin mRNA expression increased in visceral and brown adipose tissue of LD mice; metreleptin did not alter circulating chemerin.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated circulating chemerin is associated with lipodystrophy.
  • Increased chemerin levels correlate with markers of glucose dysregulation and inflammation.
  • Visceral and brown adipose tissue may be sources of increased chemerin in LD.
