  • Limited research exists on PA's impact on brain integrity in HIV-infected (HIV+) individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between physical activity and brain integrity (cognition and structural brain volumes) in HIV+ individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy HIV+ individuals completed neuropsychological testing, neuroimaging, lab tests, and a PA questionnaire.
  • PA engagement was quantified using weekly metabolic equivalent (MET) hours.
  • Participants were categorized as physically active or sedentary for group comparisons.

Main Results:

  • Physically active HIV+ individuals demonstrated enhanced executive function compared to sedentary individuals (p=.043).
  • Higher levels of PA correlated positively with executive performance (r=0.45, p=0.035).
  • Active participants had significantly larger putamen volumes (p=.019).

Conclusions:

  • A positive association exists between physical activity and brain integrity in HIV+ individuals.
  • Findings suggest PA may be a crucial factor in maintaining cognitive and structural brain health in this population.
  • Further longitudinal studies are warranted to confirm if PA interventions can improve brain integrity in HIV+ individuals.
