Microbiome of the Eye01:22

Microbiome of the Eye

32
The human eye has a specialized microbiota that reflects its unique anatomical and immunological environment. This low-biomass microbial community predominantly colonizes the conjunctiva and eyelid margins, playing a vital role in ocular surface homeostasis and defense. Despite its proximity to the richly colonized facial skin, the ocular surface maintains a distinct microbial profile due to continuous mechanical and biochemical defense mechanisms. The conjunctival surface hosts fewer microbial...

Endocarditis I: Introduction01:25

Endocarditis I: Introduction

752
Introduction:Endocarditis is the infection of the endocardium, the inner lining of the heart and its valves. When the heart muscle is involved, the condition is termed myocarditis, while an infection of the outer lining is called pericarditis. Infective endocarditis (IE) primarily affects the endocardium, where pathogens adhere to the valves or lining, forming vegetation that can lead to severe complications. Infective endocarditis occurs when microorganisms, usually bacteria from other body...

Bacterial Phylum Spirochaetes01:30

Bacterial Phylum Spirochaetes

1.2K
Spirochetes, unique bacteria in the phylum Spirochaetes, are gram-negative, motile, tightly coiled, slender, and flexible. They inhabit aquatic sediments and animals, with some causing diseases like syphilis. Spirochetes are classified into eight genera based on habitat, pathogenicity, phylogeny, and characteristics.Their distinctive motility arises from endoflagella, located within the cell’s periplasm. These endoflagella anchor at the cell poles and extend along the cell length, encased...

Atypical Pneumonia01:14

Atypical Pneumonia

38
Atypical pneumonia, often caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, is a form of pulmonary infection that differs from the classical presentation of bacterial pneumonia in both its cause and clinical symptoms. Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a pleomorphic bacterium notable for its lack of a rigid cell wall. This structural characteristic imparts resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and significantly influences the bacterium’s behavior within the human host.Other pathogens responsible for the disease...

Healthcare Associated Infections I: Iatrogenic, Exogenic and Endogenic

6.6K
Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) occur in a healthcare facility while a person receives care for another ailment. This category also includes work-related infections among healthcare staff.
HAIs significantly increase the cost of health care. Extended stays in healthcare institutions, increased disability, increased costs of medications, including specialized antibiotics, and prolonged recovery times add to the patient's expenses and the healthcare institution and funding bodies.

Endocarditis IV: Nursing Management01:29

Endocarditis IV: Nursing Management

567
Infective endocarditis (IE) is a chronic infection of the heart's endocardium, primarily affecting the heart valves. A detailed nursing assessment for a patient with IE involves collecting subjective and objective data to ensure an accurate diagnosis and timely intervention.Subjective DataThe nurse gathers information about the patient's symptoms and complaints during the subjective assessment. Patients with infective endocarditis often report non-specific symptoms that can mimic other...

Summary

Delayed-onset post-traumatic endophthalmitis (PTE) is rare after eye injuries with foreign bodies. This case highlights a new bacterial cause, Lysinibacillus spp., expanding the known pathogens for delayed PTE.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Post-traumatic endophthalmitis (PTE) is a rare complication of open globe injuries.
  • Intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) significantly increase the risk of PTE.
  • PTE typically presents acutely, with delayed-onset cases being exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • This report details a unique case of delayed-onset PTE.
  • The causative agent identified was Lysinibacillus spp., a bacterium previously unreported in ophthalmic literature.
  • This contrasts with the few existing reports of delayed PTE, which involved different microorganisms.

Findings:

  • Lysinibacillus spp. can cause delayed-onset post-traumatic endophthalmitis.
  • This finding expands the spectrum of microbial pathogens associated with delayed PTE.
  • The case underscores the importance of considering diverse etiologies in delayed presentations of endophthalmitis.

Implications:

  • Ophthalmologists should consider Lysinibacillus spp. in the differential diagnosis of delayed PTE.
  • This case may prompt further investigation into the role of Lysinibacillus spp. in ocular infections.
  • Understanding rare pathogens is crucial for effective management of post-traumatic endophthalmitis.
