Background:

  • Reflex seizures can be triggered by various stimuli.
  • Touch-Induced Seizures (TIS) and Hot Water Seizures (HWS) are recognized forms of reflex epilepsy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze clinical, electroencephalography (EEG), and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging data in patients experiencing TIS and HWS.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of patients with TIS and HWS followed in an Epilepsy Unit.
  • All patients underwent EEG and MR imaging.

Main Results:

  • Six patients (five male, age 30-64) were studied.
  • Four patients with TIS had focal motor seizures originating from fronto-central epileptic foci, linked to peri-central gyri lesions.
  • One patient had HWS associated with septo-optic dysplasia and polymicrogyria; another experienced water contact-induced seizures (WCIS) triggered by cold water immersion.

Conclusions:

  • TIS seizures are typically focal, without impaired awareness, and often refractory to medication, though antiepileptics can prevent bilateral convulsions.
  • HWS and WCIS are focal seizures, potentially with impaired consciousness or evolving to bilateral convulsions, and are not strictly location-specific.
  • Stimulus avoidance is the most effective treatment for both TIS and HWS.
