Summary

Intravenous urography (IVU) often misses renal tumors. Ultrasound or CT scans are crucial for detecting renal carcinoma when IVU results are normal, especially for masses between 3-5 cm.

Background:

  • Intravenous urography (IVU) is a standard diagnostic tool for evaluating renal abnormalities.

Observation:

  • Three patients with renal carcinoma, whose tumors measured 3-5 cm, were initially not detected by IVU.
  • These same renal tumors were clearly visualized using ultrasound.
  • The quality of the IVU examinations was considered good.

Findings:

  • Ultrasound demonstrated renal tumors missed by IVU in three cases.
  • The size of the missed renal tumors ranged from 3 to 5 cm.
  • This highlights a limitation of IVU in detecting certain renal masses.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should consider ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) when renal tumors are suspected despite normal IVU findings.
  • Enhanced imaging modalities are essential for comprehensive renal mass evaluation.
  • Improved diagnostic accuracy can lead to earlier intervention for renal cell carcinoma.
