Background:

Nursing literature has historically focused on civil defense, with limited discussion on nuclear war prevention until the 1980s.
The professional nursing literature has not addressed the responsibility of nursing education in teaching about nuclear issues.
A gap exists between the growing interest in nuclear issues within nursing education and its representation in professional discourse.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the extent to which baccalaureate nursing programs include content on nuclear issues in their curricula.
To compare the level of activity and interest in nuclear issues within nursing education with the discussion in professional literature.

Main Methods:

A survey of baccalaureate nursing education programs was conducted.
Analysis of responses to determine curriculum content regarding nuclear issues.

Main Results:

Nursing literature inadequately reflects the actual level of activity and interest in nuclear issues within nursing education.
Responses from baccalaureate programs suggest a discrepancy between educational engagement and published discourse on nuclear topics.
The limited professional literature implies that nuclear issues are not a priority for nurses.
