Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a scoring system for a laparoscopic box trainer assessment tool.
  • To objectively demonstrate skill progression in laparoscopic surgery.

  • 170 assessments conducted over 5 years in a pediatric surgical department.
  • Participants performed six laparoscopic tasks in a box trainer, with scores based on speed and accuracy.
  • Validity and reliability tests, including Pearson correlation and Cronbach's alpha, were applied.

Main Results:

  • A significant negative correlation (r = -0.63, p < 0.001) between surgeon experience and assessment score was observed.
  • Mean assessment scores improved (decreased) with increasing experience levels (p < 0.001).
  • Cronbach's alpha was 0.70 and intraclass correlation coefficient for test-retest reliability was 0.81.

Conclusions:

  • The developed scoring system demonstrates construct validity and adequate reliability for assessing laparoscopic skills.
  • Simulation training in a laparoscopic box trainer leads to demonstrable skill improvement at all experience levels.
