Summary

Low levels of vitamins B6, C, D, and E are linked to abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). However, vitamin supplementation may not prevent AAA incidence, despite associations with lower vitamin levels in patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize the association between vitamins B6, B12, C, D, and E and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
  • To provide meta-analytic estimates of vitamin levels in AAA patients compared to controls.
  • To evaluate the potential of vitamin supplementation in AAA prevention.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials up to April 2015.
  • Inclusion of case-control studies and randomized controlled trials.
  • Meta-analysis of standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for vitamin levels.

Main Results:

  • Significantly lower circulating levels of vitamins B6, C, D, and E were observed in patients with AAA compared to controls.
  • Vitamin B12 levels were non-significantly lower in AAA patients.
  • Supplementation trials with vitamins B6/B12/folic acid and vitamin E did not demonstrate a preventive effect on AAA.

Conclusions:

  • Low circulating levels of vitamins B6, C, D, and E are associated with the presence of AAA.
  • Vitamin B12 levels do not show a significant association with AAA.
  • Vitamin supplementation (B6, B12, E) is unlikely to reduce AAA incidence.
