Summary

The snap-on implant-level impression technique offers superior 3D accuracy compared to transfer coping methods. This technique demonstrated comparable accuracy to the open-tray impression method for implant restorations.

Background:

  • Accurate dental impressions are crucial for passive fit of implant-supported prostheses.
  • This study evaluated the 3D accuracy of different impression techniques for implant restorations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the three-dimensional accuracy of open-tray and three closed-tray impression techniques.
  • To determine the most accurate impression method for various implant systems.

Main Methods:

  • Three master models with parallel implants (Biohorizons, Straumann tissue-level, Straumann bone-level) were used.
  • Forty-two polyvinyl siloxane impressions were made using open-tray and closed-tray (snap-on, transfer coping, transfer coping plus plastic cap) techniques.
  • Impression accuracy was evaluated using a coordinate measuring machine to assess positional accuracy and linear displacement.

Main Results:

  • The snap-on technique showed significantly lower linear displacement (ΔR) than transfer coping (TC) and TC plus plastic cap (TC-Cap) techniques.
  • No significant differences in accuracy (Δx, Δy, Δz, ΔR) were found between closed and open impression techniques for the Straumann tissue-level system.

Conclusions:

  • The snap-on implant-level impression technique provides higher 3D accuracy than TC and TC-Cap techniques.
  • The accuracy of the snap-on technique was comparable to the open-tray technique, suggesting its suitability for implant restorations.
