Summary

Higher cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) in healthy workers is linked to improved quality of life (QoL) scores. This study shows better physical functioning and overall well-being correlate with greater oxygen uptake.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) and Quality of Life (QoL) in healthy workers.
  • To analyze how VO2max scores correlate with various dimensions of QoL as measured by the SF36 questionnaire.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 250 healthy workers (90 men, 160 women) participated.
  • Cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed using an incremental cardiopulmonary test to determine VO2max.
  • Quality of life was measured using the Short-Form Health Survey (SF36).

  • Men exhibited significantly higher VO2max values (39.00 mL/kg/min) compared to women (29.70 mL/kg/min).
  • Men reported higher SF36 scores across most dimensions, with significant differences noted in physical functioning.
  • Positive correlations were found between VO2max and SF36 domains including physical functioning, bodily pain, general health, vitality, and mental health.

Conclusions:

  • Higher cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) in healthy workers is associated with better scores on the SF36 Quality of Life questionnaire.
  • Improved physical fitness may contribute to an enhanced overall Quality of Life in the working population.
