Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

Previous research on psychopathology in gender reassignment surgery candidates using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and Rorschach Inkblot Test has yielded inconsistent results.
Understanding the psychological profiles of individuals seeking gender reassignment is crucial for clinical assessment and treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the psychological assessment results of gender reassignment surgery applicants using the MMPI-2 and Rorschach Inkblot Test.
To investigate the level and nature of psychopathology in individuals undergoing gender transition.

Main Methods:

Compared MMPI-2 T scores of 112 gender reassignment applicants (56 male-to-female, 56 female-to-male) with matched general psychiatric inpatient and normal adult samples.
Analyzed Rorschach Inkblot Test data from the gender reassignment sample against normative data for various psychological groups.

Main Results:

Gender reassignment candidates exhibited a normal range mean MMPI-2 profile, with the exception of an elevation on Scale 5.
Rorschach findings indicated a high frequency of invalid protocols and psychological issues characteristic of personality disorders among candidates.

Conclusions:

The MMPI-2 suggests generally normal psychological functioning in this sample, contrasting with Rorschach findings.
