Summary

Normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) contains IgG-secreting cells, with higher proportions in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. MS CSF shows increased IgG antibody-secreting cells targeting myelin proteins, suggesting a role in disease.

Background:

  • Previous beliefs suggested limited B-cell activity in normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system (CNS).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and proportion of immunoglobulin (Ig)-secreting cells in normal and MS CSF.
  • To identify specific antibody (Ab) responses against myelin antigens at the cellular level in MS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Enumeration of immunoglobulin-secreting cells in CSF and blood from healthy individuals and MS patients.
  • Assessment of antibody-secreting cells targeting myelin basic protein (MBP) and myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) in CSF.
