Liver function tests like alanine aminotransferase and AST show limited association with coronary artery disease. However, higher albumin levels may indicate a greater atherosclerosis burden in cardiovascular risk assessment.

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between normal-range variations in liver function tests (aspartate aminotransferase [AST], alanine aminotransferase [ALT], and albumin) and the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD).
Main Methods:
- Eighty-eight patients undergoing coronary angiography were categorized into normal, non-critical (<50%), and critical (≥50%) CAD groups.
- Serum concentrations of AST, ALT, and albumin were measured and analyzed in relation to CAD severity.
Main Results:
- Albumin levels were significantly higher in patients with critical CAD compared to those with no CAD (p=0.002).
- No significant association was found between non-critical CAD and liver function tests.
- Mean AST and ALT levels were higher in patients taking aspirin, but not directly correlated with CAD severity.
Conclusions:
- Alanine aminotransferase and AST may not be reliable markers for angiographically determined coronary atherosclerosis.
- Albumin may serve as a more sensitive biomarker for assessing the extent of atherosclerosis.
- The interplay between liver function and coronary atherosclerosis is complex and warrants further research.
