Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Immunology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Yersinia infections are known triggers for reactive arthritis.
  • Antibody cross-reactivity can complicate serological diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection and reactive arthritis.
  • To identify clinical manifestations in patients with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis serology.

Main Methods:

  • Serological testing for Yersinia pseudotuberculosis antibodies.
  • Clinical assessment of patients for arthritis and sacroiliitis.

Main Results:

  • Seven patients showed unexplained Yersinia pseudotuberculosis serology.
  • Three patients developed severe arthritis; two had sacroiliitis symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infections are a potential cause of reactive arthritis.
  • Clinical presentation may include arthritis and sacroiliitis.
