Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a self-administration procedure for the "Taste Strips" test.
  • To assess the feasibility and reliability of self-administered gustatory function testing.
  • To reduce personnel effort and costs associated with taste testing.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized crossover study involving 65 participants (22 males, 43 females; mean age 36.7 ± 19.2 years).
  • Participants underwent two taste strip tests: one examiner-administered and one self-administered.
  • Results from both administration methods were compared using statistical analysis.

Main Results:

  • The mean score for the self-administered test (12.3 ± 2.6) was significantly higher than the examiner-administered test (11.6 ± 2.6) (p < 0.01).
  • A minimal mean difference of 0.7 ± 1.9 points was observed between the two methods.
  • A significant positive correlation (r65 = 0.734; p < 0.01) was found between the assisted and self-administered test results.

Conclusions:

  • The self-administration procedure for the "Taste Strips" test is an adequate screening tool for gustatory function.
  • Despite a small observed difference, the method requires less personnel effort.
  • This approach can improve the management of patients with chemosensory disorders.
