Cryptococcosis complicating continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

Summary

We describe a rare case of invasive cryptococcosis in a patient undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. The infection was successfully treated, highlighting a previously undocumented complication of this dialysis method.

Background:

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is a common renal replacement therapy.
Patients on CAPD are at increased risk for infectious complications.
Invasive fungal infections, including cryptococcosis, are serious concerns in immunocompromised individuals.

Observation:

A patient undergoing CAPD developed invasive cryptococcosis.
This specific complication in CAPD patients has not been previously documented.
The clinical presentation and diagnostic process are detailed.

Findings:

Successful treatment of invasive cryptococcosis was achieved in this CAPD patient.
The case demonstrates the potential for Cryptococcus to cause invasive disease in this population.

Implications:

This case expands the spectrum of known infectious complications associated with CAPD.
